Consolidating Helsinki’s port areas allows for a strengthened urban spectacle (a unique feature of the South Harbor) by increasing interaction between viewing areas and the functioning port. New viewing areas expand public access to the water while the port’s logistical efficiency is improved and port-related vehicular traffic in the city center is eliminated. The effect is achieved in part by the creation of a new ferry terminal, which forms a heroic infrastructure built into the sea. In turn, this frees valuable waterfront for new public functions, with a threefold expansion in open space.
