The construction of a new ground over Sunnyside Yard will stitch multiple Queens communities back together and significantly increase affordable housing supply in the borough. The proposed neighborhood is planned around three guiding principles: affordable homeownership, job creation—with opportunities in construction, agriculture, and food production—and a verdant, sustainable productive public realm to which inhabitants have a sense of belonging.
The plan is organized in ribbon blocks, changing in nature and density as they move north, responding to solar orientation and prevailing winds. The blocks are connected at multiple levels, forming a web of indoor and outdoor communal, green, and productive spaces. These spaces contribute to a sense of community as well as an enhanced biodiversity. The buildings' bay structure allows for incremental expansion, either into voids within the envelope or through outward projections.
