After completing a feasibility study, OverUnder (in collaboration with West Work) is transforming the Haverhill Public Library to help it meet twenty-first century needs and to enrich the civic resources provided to the local community. Originally completed in 1960, the building was last renovated and expanded in 1996. The facade enclosure and mechanical systems are reaching the end of their useful life, and the team is completely replacing the envelope with more energy-efficient facades, new mechanical systems, and interior renovations designed to improve patron services. The project fulfills a series of priorities that were first identified in a robust community engagement process, one that included participatory design, focus groups, and stakeholder interviews. New large-scale windows open the library where it was formerly closed; meeting rooms and other amenities support the needs of the local community and staff; the entrances have been enlarged to make the library both ADA accessible and more welcoming; and connections between inside and outside bring more light, views to the surrounding context, and a sense of orientation for patrons.
