Boston City Hall Conservation Management Plan
The Boston City Hall Conservation Management Plan (CMP) involved a five-year effort by OverUnder, Utile, and Building Conservation Associates that culminated more than a decade of research, advocacy, oral histories, master planning, pilot projects, material testing, advocacy efforts, public engagement, and tactical initiatives by the team and leadership from the City of Boston. The CMP publication provides a resource that outlines the building’s history, design intentions, and significance, while establishing policies to carefully manage the evolution of this outstanding example of concrete modernism. The CMP was supported by a grant from the Getty Foundation’s Keeping It Modern program. It takes the form of a 327-page document that gives municipal officials who oversee the building a grounding in its values and significance and includes 139 policies developed through a consensus-building process with city officials—policies that are meant to enable change while ensuring Boston City Hall’s continued integrity across its next half-century of service.
