This vital pedestrian and bike connection below a major highway has been a source of concern for Somerville residents: pedestrian accidents and fatalities have occurred as a result of the high speed car traffic on the edges and the space itself is dark and dingy.
In concert with the community, their elected representatives, key stakeholders and MassDOT, OverUnder has proposed improvements intended to make the connection a safe and pleasant experience. These include enhancing pedestrian safety with traffic signals and refuge islands at crossings; simplifying and separating the pedestrian and bicycle paths; removing elements that obscure sight lines; introducing shade-loving vegetation and a rock pond designed to improve drainage; and installing artwork through a curated set of artistic lighting, painted surfaces and sculptures.
