This municipal park in Somerville provides a new playground and collective space for the surrounding residential neighborhood. As a consultant to GroundView (the landscape architects), OverUnder was responsible for designing benches, tables, and other custom furnishings.
These are based on a reconfigurable module that reacts to the specific siting of each piece. The system’s most basic form is a single bench-like seat constructed of recycled composite planks, a steel substructure, and typically mounted to the park's concrete retaining walls. In response to the particular characteristics of its location in the park, this basic unit was extruded, modified with seatbacks, or interrupted by powder-coated aluminum side tables.
The goal was to make a coherent system that is playful in its variety across the site, recalling the larger strategies of the park. Photographs provided by GroundView.
