Situated at the interface between a grid of nondescript vinyl-clad homes on dirt lanes and the spectacular ocean shoreline, this small addition to a beach house creates an iconographic presence through its pattern and cubic form. The addition provides an elevator and stair to a house recently raised one floor by a design-build company. The blank surfaces of the elevator and the shifting floor plates of the stair made an organized or balanced pattern of openings impossible. Instead, the project employs an informal pattern of openings and color panels that addresses the large scale of the natural surrounds while responding to irregular internal demands for views and light. This façade extends over a portion of the original house and floats above a stone base. The stair inside links all three floors with a vertical wooden screen.
